چکیده

Insect Dorsal Ocelli (9:00am–12:30pm, Room 304, July 27th) Organizer: †Joshua van Kleef (University of California Berkeley, USA). Most insects possess three simple eyes, known as the dorsal ocelli, whose role in behavior has fascinated scientists for hundreds of years. Our workshop will examine the latest optical, anatomical, neurophysiological and behavioural clues to the functions of ocelli in a diverse range of insects that includes ants, bees, dragonflies, blowflies, locusts and wasps. Timetable 8:50am – 9:00am Welcome

The Dual Function of Orchid Bee Ocelli as Revealed by X-Ray Microtomography

Visually guided flight control in the rainforest is arguably one of the most complex insect behaviors: illumination varies dramatically depending on location [1], and the densely cluttered environment blocks out most of the sky [2]. What visual information do insects sample for flight control in this habitat? To begin answering this question, we determined the visual fields of the ocelli-though...

Biomimetic sensor suite for flight control of a micromechanical flying insect: design and experimental results

Four prototypes of biomimetic sensors have been designed and implemented for flight control of a robotic flying insect. The ocelli use four photodiodes to detect changes in light intensity in the surrounding. The halteres use piezoactuated vibrating structures to sense body rotational velocities via the Coriolis forces. The optic flow sensors consist of linear arrays of elementary motion detect...

Controlling free flight of a robotic fly using an onboard vision sensor inspired by insect ocelli.

Scaling a flying robot down to the size of a fly or bee requires advances in manufacturing, sensing and control, and will provide insights into mechanisms used by their biological counterparts. Controlled flight at this scale has previously required external cameras to provide the feedback to regulate the continuous corrective manoeuvres necessary to keep the unstable robot from tumbling. One s...

An Ocellar Dorsal Light Response in a Dragonfly

One of the functional roles suggested for the insect ocelli is their involvement in flight behaviour such as the maintenance of stability by monitoring movements of the animal relative to the horizon (Hesse, 1908). In a recent study on second order ocellar neurones in locusts, Wilson (1978) concluded from physiological and anatomical considerations that this system is ideally suited 'to detect ...

Remote Radio Control of Insect Flight

We demonstrated the remote control of insects in free flight via an implantable radio-equipped miniature neural stimulating system. The pronotum mounted system consisted of neural stimulators, muscular stimulators, a radio transceiver-equipped microcontroller and a microbattery. Flight initiation, cessation and elevation control were accomplished through neural stimulus of the brain which elici...
